Biography

Xi Liu obtained his Bachelor degree in Material Science at University of Science and Technology of China. He earned his PhD in physical chemistry at Fritz-Haber-Institute, Max-Planck Society in 2008 under supervision of Prof. Robert Schlögl. Later on, he joined Prof. Graham Hutchings’ group at Cardiff Catalysis Institute, Cardiff University. Xi’s research focuses on electron microscopy and heterogeneous catalysis. He worked on hydrocarbon functionalization, dehydration, hydrochlorination, selective reduction, as well as biomass transformation, and he gained expertise on polyoxometalates and carbon chemistry.

In Fall 2014, Xi joined Syngaschem BV in order to study heterogeneous catalysis using environmental electron microscopy. In collaboration with the group of Andy Burrows and Jacob Wagner at DTU Lyngby, Denmark, he focused on dynamic structural and physiochemical evolution of nano particles under chemical environment. Since November 2015, he continues this line of research at SynCat@Beijing.
