Synfuels China
SynCat@Beijing is founded and owned by Synfuels China Co. Ltd.
Synfuels China was established in 2006 as a spin-off from the State Key Laboratory of Coal Conversion at the Institute of Coal Chemistry, which is part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at Taiyuan. Its headquarter is located in the Huairou District near Beijing.
Since its start in 2006, Synfuels China has become one of the world-wide leaders in CTL technology. At the heart is a Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis process based on an iron catalyst.
Synfuels China not only has extensive experience in applied catalysis research and technology, but is also highly reputed for its computational molecular modeling work.
The CTL pilot plant at Erdos (Inner Mongolia) actually produces 5000 barrels per day of synthetic fuel, and is equipped with a CO2 capturing unit.
Syngaschem BV
Syngaschem BV was a small research enterprise in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, established in 2013 to assist Synfuels China Technology in preparing and building up SynCat@Beijing. Among others, it organized the recruitment of international scientific staff for the new institute. In addition it has organized several educational events on relevant scientific subjects and on scientific leadership for the staff of SynCat@Beijing, and also for other interested parties.
Syngaschem also had its own research program in Eindhoven, where it employed three senior scientists and two PhD students, while undergraduates from a nearby Technical College frequently participated in the laboratory work as well. It performed surface science research on the mechanism of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, and on electrochemistry of water splitting.
The activities were financed by Synfuels China, the Horizon 2020 Program of the European Union, and the Netherlands Organisation for Research (NWO).
Syngaschem closed it laboratories in 2023, and functions now mainly as a consulting activity, with active involvement in some of the research projects at SynCat@Beijing.
Through the SynCat Ac@demy, Syngaschem supports education and scientific leadership develop-ment.
